The beloved Dr. Charles Wheeler, mayor of Kansas City for much of the 70's - the Democrat who brought in the Republican Convention in 1976 - un-retired from politics in 2002 and went to the statehouse as my state senator, because he was disgusted with what was happening in Jefferson City. I spent many a Sunday brunch during campaign season drinking Mimosa's and wearing a Tiara at the bar of Kiki's Bon Ton Maison on Westport Road. We were his supporters and our meeting spot was KiKi's. He sailed to victory on a river of Champaigne and fresh-squeezed orange juice.
Now, at eighty years old (and he is still the volunteer staff pathologist for the laboratory at the Samuel U. Rodger's Community Health Center, which allows our lab to stay open and licensed) he is throwing his hat into the ring to run for County Executive.
That gang of brawling idiots, every one of whom could be turned out next election, and replaced with tic-tac-toe playing chickens and we would get better results; need someone like Doctor Wheeler. I know the man - both as a doctor and as a politician - he can be calming and reassuring and glib and suave and the perfect gentleman. But the man survived Medical school over 50 years ago. He is sharp as a tack and does not suffer fools with the slightest bit of aplomb. Let those snot-nose punks in the county legislature get out of line and start throwing punches at one another with him at the helm, and the curmudgeon will emerge and the offenders will be soundly chastened. Bad behavior simply will not be tolerated.
A Charles Wheeler led county legislature - just what the Doctor ordered!
