FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 9,2006 Missouri Gaming Commission Salutes Veterans Jefferson City, Thursday, November 9, 2006 –

“On Veteran’s Day we pay tribute, and commend those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. We honor the many brave men and women who have given of themselves.” Missouri Gaming Commission Executive Director Gene McNary adds, “to that end, we are pleased the MGC contributes substantially to Veterans through the Veterans’ Commission Capital Improvement Trust Fund.”

Each year the Missouri Gaming Commission contributes a portion of the two dollar admission fee on Missouri’s riverboat casinos to the fund. The money amounts to 6 million dollars for fiscal year 2006. Since 1994 over 131 million dollars has been contributed. Executive Director Gene McNary says “money in this fund is spent on the construction, maintenance and equipment needs of Veteran’s Homes and cemeteries. The fund also provides grants to Veteran’s Service Officer Programs, and medals and medallion programs for World War II and Korean Conflict Veterans.” McNary concludes, “any fund which assists our veterans is very important.”

-End-
Until one is reminded that the Gaming Commission is required by law to pony over the dough. It was one of the concessions the casinos made in exchange for Missouri allowing casino gambling to set up shop in the state.

They aren't *supporting veterans* because they think it's a swell idea. They are *supporting veterans* because they have no choice in the matter.
