Self-Indulgence Alert...

The rescue of the hikers on Mt. Hood, and their insistence that their dog saved their lives has me missing the best friend I ever had. She died about two months before I started this blog. I wrote an obituary for her and made cards for the kids to keep. They all came home to bury her, and I still have not committed to another dog.

Bandit

A Family Member Since September 1991

January 18, 2005

This morning I lost perhaps the best friend I will ever have.

Bandit was my friend, my confidant, and my Nanny for nearly 14 years.

Fiercely devoted to Her Mistress,

My family and our home became her exclusive protectorate

And nothing dare threaten our domain while she was on the job.

True to form, she remained ever vigilant to her very last day.

A few people are fortunate enough to have one perfect relationship

With one pet that is their perfect match.

Bandit was mine. I didn’t raise her, but that didn’t matter to either of us.

Her protective stance was not mere bravado,

More than once she was put to the test, and each time she prevailed.

For fear of my safety, she attacked the Pacific Ocean

When the tide lapped at my feet.

For nearly fourteen years she listened to me without criticism or judgment

And she takes many secrets to her grave.

She protected our home and our children,

Asking for nothing in return.

She leaves to mourn her passing her family, including three adult children who have grown to responsible respectable adults

Due in large part to the fact they grew up with her.

She helped us to teach them responsibility, kindness, and respect.

She gave much more than she ever took

And for her years of love and devotion we will forever be grateful.
