Hickam AFB Brings Hydrogen Fuel Source Online

Back in November, to little fanfare, Hickam AFB in Hawaii brought a hydrogen fueling station on-line, moving the Air Force into the green technologies sector.

The hydrogen facility, which opened in November, generates hydrogen from water for fueling buses, tow-tractors, vans, sedans and ground-support equipment.

The Air Force hopes it will some day provide a significant source of renewable energy that can help the service overcome its dependency on petroleum products.

The facility is a joint green-energy initiative between the Hawaiian Center for Advanced Transportation Technology and the Air Force’s Advanced Power Technology office.

Stories like this make me proud of my connection to the Air Force. I never felt like the locals resented us anywhere we were stationed. We were pretty much universally thought of as good neighbors. This kind of community betterment project is why that sentiment seems to prevail.
