In a brazen daylight raid, gunmen dressed as Interior Ministry police officers kidnapped upwards of 100 (male) employees and visitors inside the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Scholarships and Cultural Relations Directorate in Baghdad. Higher Education Minister Abed Theyab immediately suspended classes at all Universities nationwide, although the order was rescinded after increased security measures were promised.
The kidnappings have achieved one "positive" measure: Both Sunni and Shiite lawmakers have denounced the action.
I have been visiting the point off and on that the instability in Iraq has depleted the professional and educated classes to the point it will take the country decades to recover, and I have been right about that. There is a Taliban-esque movement afoot in Iraq that seems intent on dragging the country back to about the 12th century. So far, approximately 150 professors have been murdered and many more have fled the violence and left the country.
In the words of Pale Rider...Look what the Decider decided to do. And if he had a lick of common sense or he had not slept through Anthropoloogy 101 he would have been able to see this coming. I fail to see how anyone in their right mind can justify what we have done to that country.
