Sportsmanship Gets Head-Butted in Berlin

What a disappointment! Zenadine Zidane, the emotional favorite in this World Cup tournament, lost control and head-butted an opponent the last moments of overtime and was red-carded and left the stadium. France went on to lose a penalty kick shoot-out 5-4.

I was rooting for France up until the moment Zidane head-butted his opponent in the chest and dropped him to the ground. At first it seemed he would get away with it. (Soccer has no instant replay, and they did show it on the giant screens in the stadium, so we will never know if the official saw the actual infraction or the replay. It took so long to call that the timing is suspicious. But the red-card was deserved, and he fucked his team – and his reputation – in front of about a billion people.

What a shame to end such a brilliant career in such a chickenshit manner.
