I started to comment on the last post, and as I began to type, I realized I might as well write a follow-up post. It is indeed about Iraq and the war and the loss of life predicated on LIES. And I have earned my right to criticize the C-in-C and will continue to do so when I feel criticism of the president is in order. I shop the commissary every month. I feel pride every time I drive through the gate and the sentry salutes.
I have seen the military change before my eyes with this administration and the undermining of the honor code, and it distresses me. We are losing seasoned officers at a rate seen only twice before in our history. We are losing officers at the rate we lost them when the south seceeded; and after the vietnam war...The last time the military was lied to about a mission. The losses rippling through the officer corps is not unprecesented; but it is a sad portent of a rocky future.
No political party has a lock on the loyalty of the military, and no political party has exclusive rights to patriotism. I have known as many Democrats in uniform as I have Republicans, no matter what the right wing wants you to think. Especially in SAC, where the brainiacs found refuge; and won the cold war without firing a shot.
My husband is not the only Major to leave after 20 instead of hanging around for 30 and possibly getting a bird, but definitely getting silver clusters. The honor code is in peril. Hell, Nathan Sassaman himself pissed on it. When a Colonel Sassaman falters, the mission is dubious.
It was a mistake to go in. I will not back down on that point. This whole bloody mess was avoidable and optional. Now we are stuck, with no exit plan. I would think that those who backed this president would be the ones who would be really pissed. It's hard to admit to being duped. But this president fucked us all, and we didn't get kissed, he won't respect us in the morning (because he didn't respect us to begin with), and he ain't gonna call us tomorrow.
