Gun Control

"Gun Control" is being able to hit your target. "Gun Control" is knowing where the god-damn bullet you just fired is going to go. "Gun Control" is the issue that is killing us as a party. Gun Control turned the middle of the country red, because you ain't takin' the guns away from the folks in Harrison County, Missouri; God Damnit!

I hate gunshot wounds with all of the loathing that you would expect from one in my professional position. If I could wave a magic wand and make them all disappear, I would exercise the option on the handguns and assault weapons that are prolific on our streets. But I'm not holding my breath waiting for this opportunity. The last fairies I saw turned out to be the product of bad acid, and their "magic wand" was just a twig.

Yeah, if I could, if it were within my power, I would get rid of the guns that were made to kill people. The problem is, if you don't have magic powers, but instead have to rely on legislative jurisprudence (HA!) then forget it. All kinds of guns are here to stay.

Then there is that pesky second amendment. You know that militia the founders mentioned, the one that exists to keep the government in check by the people, instead of the other way around. That is you, and that is me. Switzerland requires all male citizens of adult age to posses a working rifle and the ability to use it. What happened at the gates of the Forbidden City in Beijing would not happen here. This population would shoot back.

Here is my proclamation: I will not support any Democrat who supports gun control. I will be out front on this issue, and I am in good company. Any time Paul Hackett or Brian Schweitzer want me to join them for dinner, I'm all theirs! I've been in a lot worse company - recently!

I am primed for the 2006 mid-terms. It is my fervent goal to get the idiotic gun-control plank removed from the Democratic party platform. It's a loser for us just like abortion is for the Republicans. Those of us in the wide middle (about 80-85% by my guess) need to stand up to the lunatic fringe on both ends of the spectrum and tell them that we have heard enough, now sit down and shut the fuck up, you look like an idiot and you are making the rest of us look like idiots by association.

If we took that plank out of the platform, 25 congressional districts would come into play. Look what happened yesterday in Ohio. Jean Schmidt should have sailed to victory. Instead, the RNC and the candidate herself poured money and staff into hanging onto a seat that has had a democrat in that seat less than 15 years total, since 1879. No Republican has ever won that seat with less than 70% of the vote.

Then along came Paul Hackett. Iraqi war veteran, Democrat, and pro-gun. Pissed off the party and didn't care. Came within four points of a victory when he wasn't supposed to break 35% of the vote.

We can't make guns go away. We can make the gun-control issue go away. Let's do so now.
